Juan Francisco Casas Ruiz was born in La Carolina, Jaén, 21 September 1976. He got a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1999 and a Master in Fine Arts in 2003 from the University of Granada. During his studies he was first in his class and won the National Award for Master Thesis of the Ministry of Education and Science for the best graduate qualifications in Spain, an award which was presented by Culture Minister, Pilar del Castillo.
In 2000, he received the scholarship of Teacher Education and Research. From that year until 2004 he completed his PhD at the University pf Granada while also teaching drawing and printmaking in their Department of Drawing.
In 2002 he was selected for the INJUVE Art Show, at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and later toured the capitals of Latin America. Since this year he is represented by Galería Fernando Pradilla (Madrid) and Galería El Museo (Bogota, Colombia), but has also done collaborations with Galeria Luis Adelantado (Valencia-Miami), Galeria Metta (Madrid) or Ferrán Cano Gallery (Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca), among others.
In 2004 he won the prestigious ABC Prize of Painting, the president of the jury being the artist Luis Gordillo, and the award was given by Culture Minister Pilar del Castillo.
In 2005 he was the only Spanish representative in the 2nd Biennial of Prague, (Prague Biennale 2, Expanded Painting / Direct Action) organized there by the major international journal of contemporary art Flash Art Magazine and was among other relevant international artists such as Damien Hirst, Maurizio Cattelan and Neo Rauch.
In 2006, after residing in Berlin, he participated in the exhibition Catharsis - Rituals of Purification in the Museo Artium, Basque Museum of Contemporary Art, Vitoria, (along with featured artists such as Antoni Tapies, Antonio Saura, Miquel Barceló, Jorge Oteiza and Antoni Muntadas) and The Sock Strategy. Sock Strategy in the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Seville.
While living in Brighton (UK) in 2007 he received the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome where he lived one year. In Rome he collaborated with the artist Joseph Kosuth, as well as Kosuth’s installation of his exhibition at La Casa Encendida in Madrid.
In 2008 he had exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando (Madrid), at the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome and in Las Vegas (USA) in the group show The Joy of Sex.
In 2009, he had his works displayed at the Instituto Cervantes in New York, Warsaw and Moscow, in the exhibition 10 Years of Art in the ABC Awards.
In 2010 he participated, along with artists such as Gustave Courbet, Edward Hopper, Gerhard Richter, Edouard Manet, Erwin Wurm, Robert Longo, Chuck Close, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Rineke Dijkstra, Otto Dix, Richard Estes, Franz Gertsch, Julian Opie, Sam Taylor-Wood and Andreas Gursky, in the impressive display Realismus. Das Abenteuer der Wirklichkeit (Realism The Adventure of Reality) in the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung, Munich and at the Kunsthalle in Emden (Germany), and in the group show After Post (beyond the photo) with Vik Muniz, Gregory Crewdson, Helena Almeida, John Baldessari, Sherrie Levine Luis Gordillo and Sherrie Levine. Also in 2010, he was awarded the Fellowship of the College of Spain in Paris where he lived until the end of that year.
In 2011 he participated with Alex Katz, General Idea and Hans-Peter Feldmann in the group show Cover girl at the Galerie des Galeries, Paris, and in 2012 in the group show Alternative at the Galerie Seine 51, also in Paris.
In 2013 he took part together with Dalí, Picasso and Miró of the colective show of Spanish art from the XX and XXI century, "Hola! Spain - Spanish Modern and Contemporary Art" at the Cube Museum of the Seongnam Art Center, (South Korea) and in "De madonna a Madonna (De)construcciones de lo femenino en la sociedad contemporánea" at the Museum Da2 Domus Artium 2002 of Salamanca (Spain).
In 2014 he exhibited at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery, New York, at the show 'Stranger than Fiction'.
He has had numerous solo exhibitions highlighting Saturdaynigthbathroom, Bare(ly)there and Foreignaffairs, (A)utopic, (Galería Fernando Pradilla, Madrid, 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2014 respectively), After(h)ours (Galería El Museo, Bogotá, Colombia 2011), MyLovingNation (Galería Ferran Cano, Palma de Mallorca, 2007), Sacrebleu! (Sandunga Gallery, Granada, 2006), Mis(s)behave (Sala Rivadavia, Diputación Provincial de Cádiz, 2006) and participated in the most important art fairs in the world and in almost all editions of ARCO since 2002. Exhibitions in New York, Miami, Chicago, Seoul, Singapore, London, Paris, Mexico and Basel, among many others, have benefited from his work and he has received numerous awards and national and international scholarships.
As a parallel effort he has published numerous books including poetry books like Thesummerhaikus and A and Other Poems at Editions Alea Blanca.
His work is represented in major collections including the Museum Artium or the ABC Museum and in private collections around the world.
